Volunteer Emergency Worker Credit
Who Qualifies?
• Volunteer Emergency Workers
• Must have worked 9 months during the tax year.
• Can not have been compensated more than $5,000 for work as a volunteer.
What is the Credit?
• $500 Illinois state tax credit
• Non-refundable
• Must have $500 tax liability to receive the full credit.
• First-Come, First-Served for 10,000 applicants.
How is this credit acquired?
1.Your fire department must send a list to the OSFM by January 12.
2. You must submit an online application with IDOR (opens February 1st)
3. Make sure your application name EXACTLY matches the fire department list.
4. You will receive a certificate number to use on your Illinois tax return.
5. Once processed, you can look up your certificate number on MyTax.Illinois.gov
